I have:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>tried to wrap my head around archaeological theory at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lamp.ac.uk\/\" target=_blank>Lampeter<\/a> in the early &#8217;90s.<\/li>\n<li>counted land snails, also at Lampeter (and in a lab with a microscope, no less).<\/li>\n<li>learned all about human skeletal remains at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/archaeology\/\" target=_blank>Institute of Archaeology<\/a> in London and University College London&#8217;s Department of Anatomy.<\/li>\n<li>presented a paper at the <a href=\"http:\/\/antiquity.ac.uk\/tag\/index.html\" target=_blank>Theoretical Archaeology Group<\/a>&#8216;s Liverpool meeting in 1996,<\/li>\n<li>helped excavate a mediaeval Welsh castle (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.carewcastle.com\/\" target=_blank>Carew<\/a>), a mesolithic camp site on the Severn Estuary (Goldcliff), various rescue excavations around the south of England for three professional field units (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.essexcc.gov.uk\/vip8\/ecc\/ECCWebsite\/dis\/gui.jsp?channelOid=15274&amp;guideOid=15035\" target=_blank>Essex County Council Field Archaeology Group<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archaeologicalsolutions.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Archaeological Solutions<\/a> (formerly, Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordarch.co.uk\/\" target=_blank>Oxford Archaeological Unit<\/a>), a small town on a remote hilltop in western Sicily, and the middle of the Forum in Rome.<\/li>\n<li>taught my own class on Roman archaeology at Stanford University, in California &#8212; in addition to several TA assignments there.<\/li>\n<li>been the primary project manager on a collaborative project between the Stanford Humanities Lab and a research group at Daimler-Chrysler, with the aim of investigating how people will use &#8220;mobile media&#8221; in cars in the year 2015 (<a href=\"http:\/\/documents.stanford.edu\/michaelshanks\/323\" target=_blank>Mobile Media 2015<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>been collecting material on the representations of the contemporary city as ruin, since 2000 (<a href=\"http:\/\/wherelondonstood.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Where London Stood<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>completed a PhD dissertation on the Roman Empire&#8217;s public libraries.\u00c2\u00a0 The title was &#8220;A Cultural Studies Approach to Roman Public Libraries: Social Negotiation, Changing Spaces, and <em>Euergetism<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>worked in an <a href=\"https:\/\/lib.stanford.edu\/art\" target=_blank>Art &amp; Architecture library<\/a>, from 2005-2010.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, they have books on archaeology.<\/li>\n<li>been Stanford University Libraries&#8217; Classics Bibliographer, from June 2009 to July 2010.  I was responsible for the curation of Stanford&#8217;s library materials dealing with the civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean.<\/li>\n<li>acted as one of the co-principal investigators at the <a href=\"http:\/\/humanitieslab.stanford.edu\/Binchester\/Home\" target=_blank>Durham-Stanford Binchester Roman Town<\/a> excavation, from 2009-2011.<\/li>\n<li>posted my r&eacute;sum&eacute;, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spoilheap.com\/CV\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.spoilheap.com\/smallfinds\/smallfinds-images\/digger-small.jpg\" alt=\"1940s Advertising Clip Art from Dover collection.\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am an expatriate British archaeologist with a varied archaeological past.
